Abstract: In wireless communication systems, a received signal may suffer short-term fading and long-term fading or shadowing. The simultaneous use of both microdiversity and macrodiversity is essential to mitigate channel degradations in composite fading environments. The wireless communication system consisting of macrodiversity receiver and two or more microdiversity receivers in the presence of shadowing and multipath fading will be considered. The most often macrodiversity receiver is of selection combining (SC) type, and microdiversity receivers could be: selection combining, equal gain combining (EGC) or maximal ratio combining (MRC) receivers. Each of microdiversity receivers has usually two or three branches. Probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF), moments and average level crossing rate (LCR) of macrodiversity receiver output signal envelope will be calculated. The obtained expressions converge for any values of Gamma long term fading parameters and short term fading parameters. Numerical results will be presented graphically to illustrate the proposed analytical presentation and to point out the effects of system’s parameters on the observed characteristics.
