Fading and Co-channel Interference as Nuisance Factors in Mobile Telecommunication Systems

Professor Dragana Krstic
Faculty of Electronic Engineering
University of Nis

Abstract: Fading and co-channel interference are serious factors of obstruction of transmission in mobile telecommunication systems. Different methods are used to mitigate these influences and to improve system performance. One of them is macrodiversity system. It consists of a few microdiversity receivers. They work in shadowed multipath fading environment under co-channel interference, which suffers small scale fading and large scale fading. In interference limited environment, the ratio of desired signal envelope and interference is important performance measure. The signal to interference ratio (SIR) is need to be calculated for Gamma distributed shadowing and some of well known small scale fading distribution (Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami-m, Weibull) or some of newer distributions (κ-µ, α-κ-µ, η-µ, ...) Probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of output signals to interference ratios at macrodiversity receivers’ outputs are obtained in the closed forms. Then, the first and the second order system performance are determined by using different mathematical functions.
