Modeling the Transfer of Aeolian Dust Aerosols and Its Impact on the Regional Climate

Abstract: In this study, numerical modelling, together with remote sensing products is used to study the transport, dispersion and accumulation of dust from deserts to the territory of the South Caucasus (Georgia). Namely, the Weather Research and Forecasting model with online coupled chemistry (WRF-Chem) is used to simulate dust aerosol transportation to the territory of South Caucasus (Georgia) from the Sahara in Africa, Arabian and ar-Rub’ al-Khali deserts located in the Middle East, Karakum and Kyzylkum in the Central Asia taking place in 2018. The WRF-Chem v.3.6.1 model’s ability in modelling is evaluated by observational mass concentration dataset of aerosol (in situ particulate matter (PM10)) and from satellite CALIPSO and MODIS photo-radiometers. Results of calculations showed that aeolian dust aerosol is an important factor affecting the climate system of Georgia.

Brief Biography of the Speaker: Teimuraz Davitashvili graduated from Tbilisi State University (TSU) in 1972 (Mathematics, specialization Hydro-air Mechanics). In 1985 received the Ph.D (candidate of Phys-Math. Sciences) and In 1997 academic degree of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics. Since 1972 researcher, senior researcher, head of department and laboratory at I.Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics of TSU. 1994-1998 Associated and 1999-2006 Full Prof. of TSU. 2006-2012 head of department „Weather Forecast , Modelling of Natural Catastrophic Events“ at Hydrometeorological Institute of Georgia. He published more than 150 research papers. General research interests are: applied mathematics, numerical modelling of climate, environmental pollution and weather
